We are thrilled to announce that the Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Initiatives (FUDECI) has officially joined the Amphibian Survival Alliance as our newest partner! With over 20 years of experience in conservation, FUDECI’s efforts to protect endangered species and empower local communities in Venezuela align seamlessly with our mission.

Under the leadership of amphibian researcher and conservationist, Dr. Margarita Lampo, FUDECI has made incredible strides in the conservation of harlequin toads, one of the most endangered amphibian groups in the Neotropics. Their Harlequin Frog Breeding and Research Center (CRIA) has bred over 500 harlequin toads, including critically endangered species like the Rancho Grande Striped Toad (Atelopus cruciger). This work is critical to ensuring the survival of species that have seen nearly 85% of their populations disappear in recent decades. The goal? To reintroduce these species back into protected habitats and restore their presence in the wild.

FUDECI’s work doesn’t stop at species conservation. They are committed to empowering local communities, ensuring that conservation efforts benefit both wildlife and people. By supporting over 196 families and 45 students, FUDECI’s programs promote sustainable agriculture and biodiversity across Venezuela. Their work with local producers on cultivating native fruits like cacao and cupuaçu is vital in combating deforestation, protecting the Amazon, and providing sustainable livelihoods for communities.

Together, with the knowledge and dedication that FUDECI brings, we are excited to strengthen our collaborative efforts in amphibian conservation. Their innovative approaches to breeding and rearing amphibians, combined with their work in community empowerment, are critical as we continue to work toward safeguarding amphibians and their habitats in Venezuela and beyond.

Please join us in welcoming FUDECI to the Amphibian Survival Alliance! We look forward to the continued success of their conservation initiatives and the positive impact we will make together.
