We’re pleased to welcome Fundación Somuncura, a dynamic non-profit based in Argentina, as a new partner of the Amphibian Survival Alliance. Since its founding in 2020, the organization has worked to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development—particularly in the unique landscapes of the Somuncura Plateau in Patagonia.
Fundación Somuncura focuses on protecting endemic species and their habitats, with a special emphasis on two Critically Endangered species: the El Rincón Stream Frog (Pleurodema somuncurense) and the Naked Characin (Gymnocharacinus bergii). Their team has already achieved an encouraging 15% increase in the overall populations of both species through a combination of habitat restoration, species management, invasive species control, and community engagement.
Key initiatives include:
- Habitat restoration and species recovery in the Valcheta Stream.
- Work toward establishing the first effective reserve on the Somuncura Plateau, protecting 20,000 hectares of critical habitat.
- Scientific research and local workshops aimed at integrating ecological conservation with community wellbeing.
Active in both Patagonia and the Pampa region, Fundación Somuncura’s projects span several provinces, including Río Negro, Neuquén, and Buenos Aires. Their vision is clear: wildlife thriving in nature, in harmony with the communities that share their landscapes.
We’re excited to collaborate with Fundación Somuncura and support their mission to restore ecosystems, recover species, and build a sustainable future. Welcome to the ASA partnership network!
