We are excited to announce that Vivek Menon, the Chair of the Amphibian Survival Alliance’s Global Council and Executive Director of the Wildlife Trust of India, has been granted the prestigious Freedom of the City of London by Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli. This honor, steeped in tradition, means Vivek can now (in theory) herd sheep across London Bridge without paying a toll—a quirky privilege dating back to the 13th century! (Though we suspect he’ll leave the sheep-herding to the professionals.)
The Freedom of the City recognition is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today, dating back to 1237. It originally granted various rights and privileges to recipients, including the right to trade within the city. Today, it is largely symbolic but remains a significant honor, celebrating contributions to the city and recognizing notable achievements.
Vivek’s recognition is a testament to his tireless dedication to wildlife conservation and his influential role in global environmental efforts. His leadership and passion have driven forward the mission of the Wildlife Trust of India and played a crucial role in guiding the Amphibian Survival Alliance’s initiatives to protect amphibian species and their habitats.
Joining Vivek in receiving this honor was Lord Nicholas Stern, a leading voice in climate change policy in the UK. Lord Stern’s efforts have been instrumental in elevating climate issues to the highest levels of government.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Vivek on this remarkable achievement! We are proud to see his hard work and dedication acknowledged in such a unique and distinguished manner.
